This low country celebration is the wedding of Lauren and Mike. They tied the knot at Old Wide Awake Plantation just outside of Charleston this summer. The last time I had seen Lauren, she was about 10 years old. Her older sister and I were close childhood friends, and I spent many vacations and holidays with her family. After I had graduated high school, Lauren’s family relocated to Chicago and Lauren continued her journey there. That journey led her to the College of Charleston (check out their College of Charleston engagement session here). On break from school and home in Illinois, Lauren met Michael, a marine home for the holidays from being stationed North Carolina. Soon after they met, Mike was deployed to help the relief and rebuilding efforts following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Upon his return to the states the two continued their relationship, long distance, with Mike visiting her as many weekends as he could. They chose to revisit Charleston, the city where they share so many fond memories, as their wedding destination. They loved showing off the area’s southern charm to their visiting family and friends, and things like the venue and food reflected southern hospitality and the low country.
The wedding featured a maritime theme with navy ribbons, Edison light strings and seashells throughout. One of my favorite details was the pink flamingos atop the wedding cake made by the bride’s sister. They were darling. They offered up useful favors, like fans and personalized sunglasses for the ceremony. It was a particularly hot and sunny day, so I know these were appreciated.
Lauren and Mike are a splendid match for each other. You often hearing about opposites attracting. From what I saw they are not one of those couples. They are wonderfully alike. Their humor and energy were totally on the same page. I think it was more than just their midwestern sensibilities….. they are really meant to be together. I know they will have great fun sharing their lives with one another. Best of luck to you Lauren and Mike!!!
